Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI)

National standards, implementation, assessment and resources for the Baby-Friendly Initiative in Canada

Re-Designation

Generation to Generation © Pat Raphael Derrickson

Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) Re-Designation occurs every five years following initial designation and confirms a facility’s continued alignment with the BFI Standards. Facilities seeking Re-Designation are not required to repeat the Recognition Program.

Throughout the five-year designation period, facilities receive ongoing support from a BCC Mentor to help sustain best practices and prepare for Re-Designation. To begin the process, facilities sign a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and submit the applicable re-assessment fee.

The Re-Designation process includes:

  • Submission of annual infant feeding statistics and a description of the facility’s demographics and population served
  • Review of the facility’s infant feeding policy and family education materials
  • Interviews with staff, leaders, and families using standardized BCC interview guides
  • A one-day site visit (in person or virtual, where appropriate) to observe public and clinical spaces
  • Evaluation of submitted documentation and interview results against the current BFI Standards
