The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is a Standing Committee of the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada (BCC). The DEI Committee includes representation from members across provinces and territories who hold various identities, lived experiences, and perspectives. The committee focus on health inequalities related to racial health, racism, and gender. The DEI committee collaborates with and supports other BCC Standing Committees on common priorities.

The BCC is committed to the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding to improve health outcomes for all families. Our anti-racism position statement responds to:

  • Ongoing impacts of colonialism, systemic racism, and structural inequities that affect Indigenous Peoples and many communities in Canada, particularly those experiencing racism, poverty, geographic isolation, disability, language barriers, or other barriers to equitable care and breastfeeding support.
  • Requests from provincial and territorial health organizations, seeking BCC leadership on how to address racial disparities in breastfeeding.
  • The need to support reconciliation and align with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canda, Call to Action #22, which calls for recognition and integration of Indigenous healing practices and knowledge within the healthcare system.
